A boiler breakdown is the last thing any Lancaster household needs, especially during autumn and winter. Hot water and reliable central heating are essentials for your home, so what common faults and problems should you be looking out for to book your boiler repair with BHE's Lancaster team?

  1. No heating or hot water in your Lancaster home

This could be due to anything from faulty diverter valves or frozen pipes to low pressure or thermostat problems. Check your boiler’s pressure first – if the pressure’s normal, get in touch with BHE's Lancaster boiler repair team as we’ll need to take a look and diagnose the problem.

BHE, Lancaster’s tip: Check the pressure, then call us.

  1. Your Lancaster boiler is switching off

Possibly a problem with the thermostat, low pressure or poor flow. Try bleeding your radiators and check your Lancaster boiler’s pressure, topping up the system if you can in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. Our boiler repair team can give you some expert advice over the phone too.

BHE, Lancaster’s tip: Bleed radiators & check boiler pressure.

  1. Boiler isn’t turning on at your Lancaster home

No power is often an electrical problem, so check the fuse or trip switch to start with. If neither of those do the trick, and if other appliances in your home are working, then there may be a problem with the boiler’s PCB (Printed Circuit Board).

BHE's boiler repair team's tip: Check your electrics & power supply.

  1. Pilot light is going out

A problem for older boilers, unlit pilot lights may be due to a faulty thermocouple that cuts off the gas supply. Make sure your gas supply is still functioning, then try reigniting the pilot light following the manufacturer’s instructions. Our Lancaster team of boiler repair experts can advise over the phone too if needed.

BHE, Lancaster’s tip: Check your gas supply & reignite the pilot light.

  1. Boiler’s making a strange noise

If your boiler’s making whistling, banging or gurgling noises (or any other sort of noise!), this might be due to a build-up of debris such as limescale in the system, a faulty thermostat or a faulty pump. A BHE boiler repair engineer will diagnose the problem & cleanse your system.

BHE Lancaster’s tip: Call an engineer to diagnose the problem.

  1. Boiler’s leaking water

Possibly the result of a leaky pump, broken valves or seals, poor pipework or corrosion to internal components, a leaking boiler may also be due to high temperatures or high water pressure. Give us a call so we can diagnose and repair the problem.

BHE Lancaster’s tip: Call a boiler repair engineer to diagnose the problem.

  1. Low boiler pressure

Check your system, including radiators, pipework and your boiler, for leaks. If you don’t find any, repressurise your boiler following the manufacturer’s instructions. Our Lancaster boiler repair team can give you some advice over the phone if you need it. No joy? Get in touch and we’ll come out to your Lancaster home.

BHE Lancaster’s tip: Check for leaks & top up boiler pressure.

  1. Radiators feel cold

It’s likely that air is causing cold spots or faults. Bleed each radiator, removing air to allow hot water to fill the radiator. It may also be worth investing in a central heating power flush, removing debris and sludge from the system to get your central heating working efficiently.

BHE's Lancaster boiler repair team's tip: Bleed radiators, then book in a power flush.

  1. Not responding to thermostat

First of all, it’s worth changing the batteries in your thermostat and checking that it’s set to the right date and time. Make sure the thermostat is set to the right temperature and not too low, and perhaps try a full reset of settings. Not working? You may need a new thermostat.

BHE Lancaster’s tip: Change batteries & check settings are correct.

  1. Hot water’s only lukewarm

Often a problem with older boilers, your appliance may have a faulty valve or heat exchanger, or your thermostat might be on the blink. Turn on your heating and test the water running from your taps to see whether it heats up. Still cool? Get in touch with BHE’s boiler repair team and we’ll diagnose the problem.

BHE Lancaster’s tip: Test heating & hot water, then call us.
