Bolton-headquartered BHE Services is celebrating its 50th anniversary on Friday 30th April 2021.
Established in 1971 by late founder Randal (Ronnie) Wilkinson, the local gas, plumbing, central heating and electrical business remains family-run, with Ronnie’s son-in-law Mike Robinson the present Managing Director, and Ronnie’s son Paul Wilkinson and Mike’s daughter Rachael both heavily involved in the day-to-day management of the business.
BHE has occupied its Darcy Lever base since the 1980s, and during the 1990s – capitalising on the national boom in gas heating – Mike and the team opened a showroom where homeowners could choose from the latest in gas fires and boilers. The site is now home to BHE’s Head Office.
BHE has always had gas safety at its heart. Starting life as CORGI approved, BHE was one of the first businesses in the country to join the Gas Safe Register when it launched in 2009. The company has since promoted gas safety and energy usage widely, through both its work and its sponsorship of schemes such as the Green Flag Award for schools.
Over the last 50 years, BHE has expanded into a 70-strong operation. Over 40 years ago, Wigan Council awarded BHE its contract to service and maintain the gas, heating and plumbing for all Wigan tenanted properties, and BHE still carries out this work today for some 22,000 properties across Wigan and Leigh.
As well as working directly with many private homeowners, BHE is now proud to care for thousands of local authority, social and student homes across the North West, and in recent years has expanded into the south Lake District.
BHE will be marking its 50 years throughout 2021-22, including charity events and discounted services for customers.
