What types of new boiler can I choose from?

There are three main types of boiler, and the right one for you will depend on factors such as the size of your home, the amount of space you have available for fitting a new boiler, how much hot water you use, and the pressure of your water supply.

Combi boiler:

These compact water heating boilers consist of a single unit which uses gas to generate heat and hot water.

You should choose a combi boiler if you have a smaller property. They are economical to run, because the boiler only heats the water needed for your water supply and to heat your home.

Combi boilers are the most popular type of boiler in the UK, and because of this, they’re easy to look after – any Gas Safe Registered engineer can service one. And because everything is contained in a single unit, a warranty for one of these new boilers will cover every part, giving you valuable reassurance that heating and hot water will be on hand when you need them.

System boiler:

Bigger than a combi boiler, a system boiler takes cold water, and uses pumps and valves to carry it to a separate hot water cylinder, usually installed in a suitable place in your home.

These are great new boilers if you use lots of hot water, often in more than one place at a time – if you take showers while running your washing machine, for example.

A new boiler unit served by a hot water cylinder can be fitted anywhere, not necessarily in a loft, so you can position it where it’s easy to reach. This can help you save money on maintenance and repairs.

Provided the pressure and flow of your water supply are good, system boilers are often a great option for larger properties with more than one bathroom.

Heat-only boiler:

Original, traditional heat-only boilers are still found in a lot of older houses. They feed cold water from a tank in the loft down to a hot water cylinder, which is then heated by a separate boiler unit, usually fitted on a wall in a handy spot inside your house, such as the kitchen.

If your mains water pressure is poor, new heat-only boilers are the most suitable for you because, as gravity feeds the hot water cylinder from the tank, water pressure isn’t a factor that prevents the supply of hot water reaching your appliances and outlets.

Also, even if your boiler isn’t working or if you have additional demand, an immersion heater is still able to supply the hot water you need.
