What is a MagnaCleanse central heating system flush?

11 Feb 2025

Just as keeping your car well maintained does a lot to keep it running smoothly, economically and efficiently, the same goes for your home’s central heating system.

BHE explains what a MagnaCleanse flush is

What is a MagnaCleanse central heating system flush? Advice from BHE’s heating engineers

Your central heating system contains many different moving parts and static components through which flow liquids and gases. These components can be damaged – or at least, may not work as smoothly as they should – because the material which they carry can itself be corrosive, and as gunk, sludge and deposits build up, your central heating loses its efficiency. You may find, for example, that rooms take longer to heat up, or radiators have cold spots.

Over time, and if left untreated, this wear, corrosion and build-up of deposits can seriously reduce the efficiency and lifespan of your central heating and hot water systems.

Why should you flush your central heating system?

The water in your central heating system circulates around a network of pipes which has only a limited number of openings.

Over time, that liquid will become contaminated with tiny – even invisible – pieces of rust and other micro-sized nasties which develop and, if left in there, will slowly grow.

If you leave these deposits untreated, you’re likely to notice that your radiators take longer to warm up, or they might develop cold spots which will start to affect the temperature they can reach, and so the amount of warmth they can create in your home.

Small pieces of rust, dirt and deposits inside your central heating system act like a magnet, trapping other tiny fragments. Like the clumps of dust you might find lurking in the furthest corners of your rooms, they can soon grow, and that’s when you might start having real problems.

These bigger obstructions can form sludge, which will sit on the bottom of your pipes and in all their hidden areas. Soon, water will be slowed down as it tries to pass these obstructions, or its flow could even be stopped altogether, putting parts of your heating system completely out of action.

How often should you flush your central heating with a system like MagnaCleanse?

BHE’s heating and plumbing professionals recommend that you get your central heating system flushed at least every five years, or possibly more often if your heat exchanger is made from stainless steel rather than more durable copper.

What types of central heating system flushes are there?

Power flush: This was the standard central heating power flush method used for many years, which relied on a chemical solution which would be injected into your pipework under high pressure. This travels through the pipes, removing dust, dirt and rust as it goes. The pressure shifts lots of debris, but can still leave more stubborn deposits behind.

Chemical flush: First, a special formulation of cleaning chemicals is added to your central heating system, which is then emptied using gravity. This allows the cleaning agents to circulate around the system, before it is flushed with fresh water and a rust inhibitor.

MagnaCleanse flush: A development of the chemical flush, the addition of a MagnaCleanse filter draws out the stubborn bits of sticky residue, so it can then be picked up and trapped in the special filter. This is then removed, and your BHE central heating system engineer can dispose of all that unwanted gunk in one go.

How does a MagnaCleanse central heating system flush work?

MagnaCleanse sends a specially-formulated cleaning solution through the inner workings of your heating system. Less aggressive than a power flush, MagnaCleanse is highly effective and efficient through magnetic filtration.

This liquid compound of chemicals contains special elements designed to remove stuck-on iron oxide sludge, magnetic debris, scale and other remaining deposits, leaving the inner workings of your system clean to allow water to flow freely.

During a MagnaCleanse central heating system flush, your BHE engineer will also take the opportunity to check your heating system for other real or potential problems, inspecting the system once it is free of obstructions.

Why choose a MagnaCleanse central heating system flush?

MagnaCleanse flushing is not only incredibly efficient, but it’s less aggressive than a power flush or a chemical flush, protecting your central heating system to help it last longer.

A magnetic filter is installed permanently, catching debris and deposits within your central heating system to protect your system from corrosion deposits and other contaminants throughout its lifetime.

With a thorough clean and a permanent filter, MagnaCleanse could even help you to save up to 6% on your energy bills!

How long does it take to flush a central heating system using MagnaCleanse?

A basic chemical flush will take just a couple of hours, but allow up to five hours for a full MagnaCleanse power flush.

The time taken varies depending on:

  • How many radiators you have
  • The age and condition of your boiler and heating/water system, and
  • The amount and state of the debris and deposits within your system.

Those few hours can pay for themselves in the longer term by making your heating and hot water system more efficient, saving you on your bills and helping your heating system last longer.
